CIO Message | August 2024

Dear Colleagues:

I would like to share the latest update on our IT initiatives via the IT Executive Dashboard, with highlights provided below.

  • UCLA has become the first UC campus to partner with OpenAI on ChatGPT Enterprise technology. Through this strategic collaboration, the university will have new opportunities to advance AI innovation, as detailed in a forthcoming press release.
  • The Ascend 2.0 program is currently on pause. A small team working closely with the Chief Financial Officer’s organization will ensure the continuity of BruinBuy Plus operations until further decisions are made.
  • To comply with the UC Information Security Investment Plan, the Security Transformation team is collaborating with the Academic Senate subcommittee on Cyber Data and Information Technology Privacy (CDITP) to guide UCLA’s Trellix implementation this fall, aiming to deploy it on all faculty devices by November 22. A Security Advisory Committee, including key campus leaders, has been established to steer UCLA’s information security strategy.
  • The Network Unification program has completed assessments of over 200 telecommunication rooms – representing 13% of the total across campus – to evaluate our current network infrastructure. These findings will guide our future network plans, which will be reviewed in upcoming workshops with ITS and campus stakeholders.
  • The FACET program has successfully tested the first two releases of the Bruin Financial Aid system with no major issues. The team is organizing campuswide communications and training, ensuring alignment with the FAFSA timeline.
  • We are on track for the September 17 launch of Canva for students and are ensuring that a robust support model is in place. The rollout for faculty and staff will follow once we finalize the license ordering process. Additional communications will follow.
  • Since March 2024, campus Google storage usage has decreased by 41%. Users exceeding their storage quotas now have limited access, with a self-service re-enablement page available for those needing more time to manage their usage. The Google Workspace Adjustment team is prepared to handle any increase in support requests during this time.

I look forward to sharing more of our progress with you next month.

Best regards,
